Vrij onverwachts stond de Dana Fuchs Band ineens op het Vlaardingse Zomerterras. Tijdens het tweede deel van de European Love To Beg Tour was er tussen de optredens in Scandinavië, Zuid-Europa en Engeland door een gaatje gevonden om nog één show in Nederland te doen. Dana’s geliefde Nederlan
d, want ze blijft volhouden dat ‘alles’ voor haar in Europa begon na het succesvolle Bospop optreden in 2008. Het Zomerterras is een bijzonder en sfeervol festival (het duurt vier weekeinden) met zowel pop-, rock-, blues-, funk-, jazz-, klassieke- en wereldmuziek. Maar ook beeldende kunstprojecten, poëzie en dans. Vrijdagavond 29 juli stond in het teken van de swingende country-soul en rauwe bluesrock en ballads.
In het hergestructureerde Oranjepark werd het ‘verrassingsoptreden’ van de ons zo bekende New Yorkse bluesrock 
Diva Dana Fuchs vooraf gegaan door het Nederlandse gezelschap Beans & Fatback. Een band met twee drummers, twee gitaristen, een bassiste, pianist, Hammond organist, verscheidene zangers en veel percussie. Ze spelen een stijl die eerder werd omschreven als een mix van Blue Eyed Country Soul met een vleugje Jingle Jangle Pop. Hoe dan ook; het swingde behoorlijk en klonk verfrissend, en dat kwam niet alleen door de mieserregen die aan het einde van het optreden neer dwarrelde.
De Dana Fuchs Band trad aan met alweer een andere drummer. De Amerikaanse freelance drummer Tom Curiano was tijdelijk vervangen door de Italiaan Piero Perelli. Verder was de bandsamenstelling als vanouds met verder de Nederlandse bassist Walter Latupeirissa en 
uiteraard gitarist soulmate Jon Diamond. Ook het thema was weer als vanouds want Dana heeft eigenlijk maar één boodschap: lief zijn voor elkaar! “Sex, booze, drugs… no matter what but be nice to each other!” Wie haar volgt op Twitter, Facebook, blog of via de nieuwsbrieven weet dat Dana een welhaast overgevoelige en zeer sociaal betrokken dame is. Iemand die bijna zelf bereid is de excessen in onze maatschappij te ordenen en zeker in staat is om troostende woorden van de juiste lading te voorzien. Zoals dat overduidelijk naar voren komt in de tearjerkers ‘Keep On Rolling’, ‘Songbird (Fly Me to Sleep)’ en de cover die weer terug was op de setlist ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, dit door een smekend verzoek vanuit het publiek. Want ook daar geeft ze gewillig gehoor aan als voorgangster van de Parochie Voor Elkaar Met Elkaar. En ze heeft recht van spreken want ondanks het succes van het recente ‘Love To Beg’ album en de energieke live shows in het afgelopen half jaar, werd ‘miss mixed emotions’ Fuchs ook geteisterd door sores en tegenslagen. Ze maakt van de nood een deugd door met die gemengde gevoelens veel energieke live shows te verzorgen. Zo ook in het relaxte Oranjepark van Vlaardingen, waar ze een gemengd publiek verbaasd deed staan van haar kunnen. Veelal zwoel afgewisseld door stoer bewoog ze over het podium of bleef ze minuten zitten op de natte planken aan de rand van het podium (“don’t care if my butt gets wet”). Maar de hoofdmoot van de show bestond toch uit dampende bluesrock songs waarin Dana zich vocaal en Jon zich op zijn gitaar helemaal kom laten gaan. En ook voor de vertrouwde bassolo van Walter, waarbij Dana weer als een slang om haar prooi 
kronkelde, was volop de ruimte. We kregen sterke versies van ‘Bible Baby [-Ring of fire]’ en ‘Drive’ voorgeschoteld maar ook de Beatles cover Helter Skelter [-Goin’ Down] en de Led Zeppelin klassieker ‘Whole Lot Of Love’. Hieruit konden we concluderen dat Dana sinds het begin van de tour in februari inmiddels goed op stoom is gekomen. En waarbij we ons ook afvroegen of de vele shows die al zijn afgewerkt, én die haar nog te wachten staan, niet al teveel afbreuk aan haar stem zullen doen? De befaamde Robert Plant scream “Wo-man, You need …” werd wellicht om die reden achterwege gelaten. Maar over het geheel was het weer een puike rockshow met de bekende blues en soul invloeden zoals we dat sinds Bospop 2008 van haar gewend zijn. We kijken nu alweer uit naar het volgende optreden in de Boerderij te Zoetermeer in oktober van dit jaar, al is het alleen al om te weten te komen welke drummer er dan weer achter de batterij plaats neemt. Het zal niet uitmaken want de DFB Expresse dendert onverminderd voort. Keep On Rolling Dana!

Dana Fuchs Band @ Summer terrace Vlaardingen
Unexpectedly stood the Dana Fuchs Band suddenly at the Vlaardingen Summer terrace. During the second part of the European ‘Love To Beg Tour’ there was space between the gigs in Scandinavia, southern Europe and England to do one show in the Netherlands. Dana’s beloved Netherlands, for she insists that “everything” for her began in Europe after the successful Bospop performance in 2008. The Summer Terrace is a special and attractive festival (it takes four weekends) with pop, rock, blues, funk, jazz, classical and world music. But also art projects, poetry and dance. Friday July 29th was dominated by swinging country-soul and raw bluesrock and ballads.
In the restructured Oranjepark was the “surprise performance” of the famous New York blues Diva Dana Fuchs preceded by the Dutch band Beans & Fatback. A band with two drummers, two guitarists, a female bassist, pianist, Hammond organist, several singers and a lot of percussion. They play a style that was previously described as a mix of Blue Eyed Soul Country with a twist of Jingle Jangle Pop. Anyway, it swung and sounded quite refreshing, and it was not because of the poor rain that swirled down at the end of the show.
The Dana Fuchs Band took up with yet another drummer. The American freelance drummer Tom Curiano was temporarily replaced by an Italian guy: Piero Perelli. Furthermore, the DF Band as we knew them; the Dutch bassplayer Walter Latupeirissa and of course her soulmate and guitarist Jon Diamond. The theme was also as always because Dana has only one message: peace ‘n love for each other! “Sex, booze, drugs, no matter what … but be nice to each other!” Those who follow her on Twitter, Facebook, blog or newsletters knowing that Dana is about a sensitive and highly socially engaged lady. Someone who virtually is prepared to solve the excesses in our society herself and certainly is capable to speak and sing comforting words. As is clearly evident in the tearjerkers “Keep On Rolling,” “Songbird (Fly Me to Sleep)” and the covertrack that was on the setlist again, “I’d Rather Go Blind”, but this was a pleading request from the audience tonight. Even that, she willingly responded to, like a predecessor of the ‘Parish For Each Other With Each Other’. And she should know because despite the success of the recent “Love To Beg” album and the energetic live shows in the past six months, “Miss mixed emotions” Fuchs also was plagued by troubles and setbacks. It makes a virtue of necessity by those mixed feelings to play many energetic live shows. Similarly, in the relaxed Oranjepark of Vlaardingen, a mixed crowd was amazed by her performance. Sensual and tough she
moved about the stage or she was sitting on the wet boards at the edge of the stage (“don’t care if my butt gets wet”). But the bulk of the show was still with steamy bluesrock songs in which Dana vocaly and Jon on his guitar blew everyone away. And also a great funky bass solo by Walter, when Dana coiled as a snake around her prey. We heard strong versions of ‘Baby Bible [Ring of Fire]’ and ‘Drive’ but also covers of the Beatles Helter Skelter [-Goin’ Down] and the Led Zeppelin classic ‘Whole Lot Of Love’. From this we concluded that Dana now has been gaining momentum since the beginning of the tour in February. But we also wondered whether the many shows that already has been completed, and still to come, she will not affect her voice too much? The famous Robert Plant scream “Wo-man, You need …” was perhaps for that reason omitted. But overall it was again a very fine rock show with the famous blues and soul influences, as we know from the DFB since Bospop 2008. We are already looking forward to the next gig at the Boerderij in Zoetermeer in October this year, and wonder which drummer sits behind the battery then. It will not matter because the DFB Express thunders unabated. Keep On Rolling Dana!
